The Russell-kaplan Paradox and Other Modal Paradoxes: a New Solution

The most successful semantics for modal logic in the narrow sense, the logic of possibility, necessity, impossibility and contingency, has been possible worlds semantics. And though various kinds of algebraic semantics (as in Bealer 1982) are emerging as noteworthy rivals to possible worlds semantics in the area of general intensional logic (such as the logic of propositional attitudes, etc.), ...

Counterpart Semantics for Quantified Modal Logic

In this paper we deal with the semantics for quantified modal logic, QML in short, and their philosophical relevance. In the first part we introduce Kripke semantics for the first-order modal language L= with identity, then we consider some unsatisfactory features of this account from an actualist point of view. In addition, we show that the calculus QE .K + BF on free logic, with the Barcan fo...

Nonstandard Semantics for Modal Logic and the Concept of a Logically Possible World

The idea that a logically possible world is identical with or can be described as a maximally consistent proposition set is a fundamental assumption of the conventional model set theoretical semantics for modal logic. Although the concept is formally unproblematic, philosophically there are serious difficulties in the standard definition of a logically possible world. I want to raise philosophi...

Modal Logic of Partitions

This thesis proposes “partitionistic elimination” in philosophical applications of modal logic based on possible world semantics to notions around information and to deontic reasoning. There are two common ideas in usages of possible worlds in philosophical logic relevant to information and agency. First, elimination of possibilities represents a condition of information acquisition and real ch...

An Externalist Way to Avoid Logical Omniscience Without Getting Logically Ignorant

Two well-known approaches to the problem of logical omniscience, impossible-worlds semantics and awareness structures, are described. Both approaches can be used to model logically ignorant agents, but both also have drawbacks when it comes to making a distinction between knowledge and veridical belief, modelling rational agents and explaining the appropriate conditions on models to do so. An a...
